We got a first look at the preliminary Naplian ship model this last weekend. It looks appropriately wicked. Getting to the design was an agonizing process. At first, we had a ship that looked more like a human based ship. As we looked over the schematics, we knew that it just wasn’t the right look. We discussed what a Naplian warship should look like over a period of several months. The consensus was that it should look evil. What exactly “evil” looked like, we didn’t know. Dave, our lead concept artist tried his hand at several designs, but none of them seemed to fit. Dmitry, our lead modeler, tried his hand and came up with an asymmetrical shape and a bug looking thing that we all agreed was a Phantatwain Tug. Phantatwains are an insect race and the vessel fit them perfectly. Great looking ship, but not Naplian or evil enough.
The development team did some more brainstorming and came upon the idea of an asymmetrical design, as asymmetry is very unsettling to the human brain. However, we still weren’t any closer to a Naplian vessel. The breakthrough finally came when Dave, while staring at his previous design attempts, leaned over his drawing board and chopped off one of the wings on a past symmetrical design that we had rejected. Suddenly, there it was. Dave made some adjustments, added some tech features that the Naplian warships had and shipped it off to the team. We knew right away that it was exactly the right design. Dmitry, took it, built the model and then textured it to bring out its “wickedness.” The result is what you see here. Run little Destroyer! RUN!!!!
