The Stellar Cloud: R&D Is The Place To Be – 6/12/2014

Research and Development in Takamo Universe will take several paths.

There will be the general overall tec level raises mentioned in an earlier blog “Caching in on Tec”. That type of R&D is the most straightforward. You pay your money, you wait for the development time to pass, and you get general improvements in overall tec and perhaps a new ship frame or piece of equipment to boot.

There will also be a tec tree with a variety of general tec branches that you can follow to obtain tec advances. Here, you employ research teams, pay them a salary, pay for research costs, and then designate a branch that you want them to follow. The results will vary according to team ability, resources expended, and a little luck. Each tec advance will have a very large and variable set of possible items or abilities that can be discovered as the research team advances along the research path.

There will be ancient archives that contain archival computer cores. You will employ and pay for the work of archival research teams who will evaluate data from the computer cores stored in ancient libraries and archaeological sites. These cores contain fragmentary information from long dead empires that may or may not be viewed as valuable to your archival research teams.

Finally, you will be able to evaluate and in some cases, reverse engineer tec found on derelict vessels and installations. You will also evaluate and assimilate some tec from captured enemy vessels after a battle. Assuming you are the one left holding the battlefield.

What does this mean for players?
This means that technology improvement can be somewhat planned but there is always room for surprises. Technology is not just a point A to point B process. You will eventually go from point A to point B but you could end up discovering some other technologies along the way that you hadn’t intended to discover. This may sound scary but this discovery process will be designed to make sure that the player experience is still fantastic and not frustrating.
