The S-5 Greyhound Standard Class Colony Ship was the mainstay of the Terran Colonial Fleet. Measuring four hundred twenty six meters from bow to stern, and having a habitat ring diameter of three hundred five meters, it was an impressive vessel. Each of its three aft fuel cells was bigger than a fleet tug. The Greyhound was originally designed as a disposable colony ship, but never saw service as such. The Greyhound class did serve as the chief colonization vehicle for nearly a thousand years in various configurations. The crew compliment of six hundred twenty officers and crew was housed in the forward section of the craft. The five thousand Colonists, support personnel and equipment were housed in the colony ring. The designed service life of a Greyhound was twelve Terran solar months. The actual service life of the average Greyhound was fifty to sixty years.
Other variations of the Greyhound design included the S-7; a three ring version capable of housing seven thousand colonists and additional support equipment for hostile environment colonies. With the exception of the Marine Corps model, the S-5 and its variants carried no weapons and no armor. Energy shields were incorporated into higher tec versions.
There was a military version, the SM-8, a five ring variant used by the Terran Marine Corps. That model carried sufficient troops, fighter size craft and support equipment to permit the Terrans to project force into distant star clusters. Once on station, the Greyhound would act as a mobile star base serving the active squadrons and troops with command and communications support, supplies, and medical services. The SM-8 Class military greyhound carried point defense weapons and reinforced bulkheads.
What does this mean for Takamo Universe players?
The Terran colony ship will be available to all empires at the outset of the game. This will enable empires to quickly expand their empire through the establishment of colonies on most planet and moon classes. New colonies mean more resources and additional bases farther from the home world, giving the empire the capacity to project power farther into the galaxy.
