The Stellar Cloud: Stars, Stars and More Stars – 6/5/2014

White Dwarfs, Red Dwarfs, Red Giants. Stars, stars, and more stars. In Takamo, stars are places for planets to circle, places to park nomad platforms and places to park star fleets. Oh, and sometimes they kill you. That is about the extent of the usefulness of stars in the original game. In Takamo Universe, stars have color and visual beauty. They determine the planet types and minerals present in the star system. They have mineral content of their own. Oh, and they are dynamic. They can change. They can explode (though not very often, and you will have advanced notice… usually). And yes, they can kill you.

Prospecting stars will be a substantial, but dangerous area of commercial mining. Stars will create solar weather to lesser and greater degrees. There will be mineral-rich star systems that cannot support habitable planets because of the star’s radiation. These systems could have solar activity so deadly that starships and structures will have their hulls stripped away by prolonged exposure.

Stars will have an effect on scanning and exploration. Nova remnants will have clouds of dust and debris around them that will inhibit scanners or give false readings. Communication to and from certain star types will be problematic. Other stars may boost communication or even hyperspace jump capacities.

Star characteristics will give observers clues about stellar cartography, mineral and metal content of orbiting planets, hyperspace rifts and wormholes.

The number of stars in the galaxy will be beyond counting. An ever-expanding horizon for players to explore, expand and exploit.
